Coming Out of Her Comfort Zone: Kaitlin’s Story
For Kaitlin, the Basecamp programme has been an opportunity to try new things, meet new people and gradually build her confidence. Her mum shares what she has seen over the course of the programme.
“The Basecamp programme has had a really positive impact on Kaitlin. As an autistic young person, she can find new situations and social interactions challenging, but throughout the programme we have seen her gradually come out of her comfort zone, build confidence and open up socially.
Basecamp has given her opportunities and experiences that she would likely never have had otherwise, and she has spoken so positively about every aspect of the programme. She has always come home excited to share what she has been doing and has genuinely looked forward to taking part.”
For Kaitlin's family, the support from the Basecamp team has been an important part of her experience.
“One thing that stood out to us as parents was how supportive and approachable the Basecamp leaders were. They took the time to get to know Kaitlin as an individual and regularly kept us updated on her progress.
Receiving feedback about how much she had grown in confidence and how much more she was engaging socially meant a great deal to us.”
Kaitlin really benefited from the accepting and welcoming environment that the Basecamp team created.
“Most importantly, Kaitlin felt accepted, understood and encouraged to try new things in a safe environment. The confidence, independence and social skills she has developed through Basecamp will stay with her long after the programme has finished.”
Kaitlin's family are grateful to the team for the support and encouragement she received throughout the programme.
“We are incredibly grateful to Anna, Jen and the whole Basecamp team for everything they have done for Kaitlin. The experience has been invaluable, and we couldn't have asked for a better group of people to support her on this journey.”
