George’s Story

George was referred to Basecamp because he lives in one of Leeds’ most deprived areas and his school life was becoming increasingly tumultuous. George was struggling significantly with peer relationships as a result.

Given a space away from school and the anxieties it brought him, George absolutely flourished at Basecamp and forged new, positive relationships with other young people. This was instrumental in allowing George to begin to trust other people again and this newfound confidence translated into George feeling able to re-engage with school and gaining so much more from his lessons. George told us:

“Basecamp has been such a helpful experience especially when I have been through my toughest times at school.”

Our impact on young people’s educational journeys has been recognised consistently by the school staff we partner with. The Assistant Headteacher at George’s school said to us:

“Thank you for all the hard work that you have put in to really give the children a lifelong set of memories but also a set of skills and characteristics that will hold them in good stead as they join the world of work and employment. As a school we are very passionate about the whole scheme and see it as nothing but beneficial for our young people. “
